He was born on March 12, 1968, in Bishopville, South Carolina, and grew up in the state's capital city, Columbia. After a successful nine-year career with the 49ers, Hanks signed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2000. He played two more seasons before retiring from football in 2002. Hanks remained involved in the sport after his playing days were over, working as an NFL executive and serving on the executive committee of the NFL Players Association. In honor of his NFL career, Hanks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame, and the San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame.
