After college, McCormack was drafted by the New York Yanks in the third round of the 1951 NFL Draft. He played for the Yanks for one season before the team folded and he was picked up by the Cleveland Browns. McCormack played for the Browns for nine seasons and was a key member of their offensive line during their championship years. He was named to six Pro Bowls during his time with the Browns and was one of the most respected offensive linemen in the league.

After retiring as a player, McCormack began a successful coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for the Browns, Baltimore Colts, Seattle Seahawks, and Philadelphia Eagles before becoming the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in 1982. McCormack led the struggling franchise to their first playoff appearance in 1983 and was named the NFL Coach of the Year. He retired from coaching in 1985 with a career record of 64-70-0. McCormack was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984 in recognition of his outstanding playing career.
