He began his hockey career at a young age, playing for the Vaughan Kings and St. Michael's Buzzers before moving on to the OHL. Cogliano made his NHL debut with the Oilers in the 2007-08 season and quickly established himself as a fast and skilled player. Over the course of his 13-year career, he played for four different NHL teams, including the Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars, and New York Islanders.

Throughout his career, Cogliano was known for his speed and endurance, setting an NHL record for consecutive games played by a skater with 830 games played from the start of his career to January 2018. He also recorded over 800 NHL games played, 100 goals, and 250 assists. Cogliano announced his retirement from professional ice hockey in January 2021 after playing 1,064 NHL games.
