In 1969, Clarke was drafted into the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the second round. He would go on to play for the Flyers for his entire career, which spanned from 1969 to 1984. During his time with the Flyers, Clarke served as the team's captain for nine seasons and helped lead the team to Stanley Cup championships in 1974 and 1975. Clarke was a dominant offensive player, scoring more than 100 points in five different seasons and finishing his career with 1,210 points in 1,144 regular-season games. Known for his gritty style and tenacious play, Clarke was also a three-time winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy for being the NHL's top defensive forward. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.

Following his playing career, Clarke continued his involvement in hockey through coaching and front-office roles. He served as the Flyers' head coach from 1984 to 1988, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985. He also served as the team's general manager from 1984 to 1990 and helped build the roster for the Flyers' next Stanley Cup-winning team in 1987. Clarke went on to serve as the general manager for several other NHL teams, including the Minnesota North Stars and the Florida Panthers, before retiring in 2013. Throughout his illustrious career, Clarke established himself as one of hockey's greatest competitors and leaders, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
