Connolly played his junior hockey with the Prince George Cougars in the Western Hockey League (WHL). In the 2009-10 season, he finished the season with 46 goals and 27 assists, earning him the Bob Clarke Trophy, awarded to the WHL top scorer. He also represented Team Canada in the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championships and was a part of the team that won the silver medal. In the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, he was picked by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round, sixth overall.

After being drafted, Connolly made his NHL debut with the Tampa Bay Lightning during the 2011-12 season. During his tenure with the Lightning, he played in 134 games and scored 34 points. Later, he played for the Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals, where he played an essential role in taking the team to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Connolly signed with the Florida Panthers in July 2019, where he had his career-best season in 2019-20 with 19 goals and 15 assists in 69 games.
