Cole played college hockey for Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York, where he was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Year in 1998-99. In his sophomore year, he led the team in scoring with 42 points, including 21 goals. He finished his college career with 82 goals and 140 points in 147 games.

In the NHL, Cole played for several teams, including the Carolina Hurricanes, the Edmonton Oilers, the Montreal Canadiens, the Dallas Stars, and the Detroit Red Wings. He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006. Throughout his career, Cole played in 892 NHL games, scoring 265 goals and adding 267 assists. His best season was in 2005-06, where he scored 30 goals and 29 assists and was named to the NHL All-Star game.
