Kaline's baseball career began in 1953, as he signed with the Detroit Tigers, a year after leaving high school. In his rookie year, he had an impressive debut, as he batted .276 with 21 doubles, 10 home runs, and 43 RBIs. He was named the American League's Rookie of the Year and was the youngest player to have played in an All-Star Game. Al Kaline received a Gold Glove Award for his superb defensive abilities in 1957, and over the years, he won ten more, in addition to his outstanding hitting skills.
