Al Libke Autograph

Al Libke was an American professional baseball player born in 1919 in Auburn, Nebraska. He played shortstop and second base during his 13-year career in both minor and major league teams. Libke’s talent caught the eye of the scouting teams when he played for the St. Joseph Angels in 1941, where he batted a career high of .311. In 1946, Libke made his major league debut with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played in 13 games, during which he achieved only two hits in 17 at-bats. The following year, he spent the entire season with the Cardinals, playing in 53 games and finishing the season with a .220 batting average. Despite his lackluster performance, Libke proved to be an excellent fielder, with a fielding percentage of .969 in his first season in Major League Baseball. He continued to play for the Cardinals until he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1948, where he played a total of 25 games, and then onto the New York Giants for the 1949 season.

After playing for the Giants in 1949, Libke went back to the minor leagues, playing for the Oakland Oaks and later the Kansas City Blues until he retired in 1952. His baseball career statistics included a .220 batting average, 3 home runs, 39 RBI’s, and a fielding percentage of .969.
