Avila's professional baseball career began in 2008 when he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the fifth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. He debuted for the Tigers in 2009 and played for the team for seven seasons. During his tenure with the Tigers, Avila was a two-time All-Star, Gold Glove Award winner, and Silver Slugger Award winner. He also helped lead the Tigers to two American League Championship Series appearances.

After his stint with the Tigers, Avila played for a few different teams, including the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Chicago Cubs. In 2020, Avila signed a one-year contract with the Washington Nationals. Throughout his baseball career, Avila has been recognized as a dependable and versatile catcher with excellent defensive and offensive abilities.
