Ramirez began his baseball career playing for the Pinar del Rio Vegueros in the Cuban National Series before defecting from Cuba in 2007. His impressive performance on the national scene helped him earn contracts with several major league teams, including the Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays.
Ramirez made his major league debut with the Chicago White Sox in 2008 and made an immediate impact in his rookie season. He hit .290 with 21 home runs and 77 RBIs, earning him a spot on the American League All-Star team. Ramirez continued to be a productive player for the White Sox, hitting .277 over his eight seasons with the team. He also won the American League Silver Slugger Award in 2010 and was named the Rawlings Gold Glove winner at shortstop in 2014.
