Larkin's baseball career started when he attended the University of Michigan, where he played for the Wolverines baseball team. He quickly became a standout player and was soon drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1985. He started his career as a shortstop and quickly became one of the best players in the league, earning MVP honors in 1995. He was also known for his excellent fielding, winning numerous Gold Glove Awards throughout his career. He played for the Reds until 2004, finishing his career with a .295 batting average, 2,340 hits, and 198 home runs. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012, cementing his status as one of the greatest shortstops in baseball history.

Larkin retired from baseball in 2004, but he remained involved in the sport. He served as a special assistant to the general manager for the Washington Nationals and was a coach for the USA Baseball team at the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Larkin was also a TV analyst for ESPN's Baseball Tonight, and in 2012, he was part of the broadcast team for the World Series on Fox. Today, Larkin is still widely regarded as one of the best shortstops to ever play the game, and his impact on the Cincinnati Reds and the sport of baseball is still felt today.
