He played as a catcher for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, and California Angels during his career. Lyons' best season came in 1990 when he hit .265 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs in just 96 games played for the Dodgers. He was known for his power hitting and his strong arm behind the plate, which made him a valuable asset for any team. Despite his success, injuries plagued Lyons' career, and he retired from the game in 1996.

After retiring from baseball, Lyons became a successful college coach, leading the Delta State University baseball team to two national championships in 2004 and 2005.
