Lee made his Major League debut in 1969 and quickly became known for his unique personality and approach to the game. He was known for his outspokenness, his love of counter-culture, and his unconventional training methods. Lee's pitching style was also unique, relying heavily on a wide array of pitches and deception rather than overpowering velocity. Lee was a successful pitcher throughout his career, finishing with a record of 119-90 and an ERA of 3.62.

Lee's most successful season came in 1973 when he finished with a record of 17-11 and helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series. Although the Red Sox ultimately lost to the Oakland Athletics in the American League Championship Series, Lee's performance was impressive, earning him the Sporting News Pitcher of the Year award. Lee played for several other teams throughout his career, including the Montreal Expos and the California Angels, before retiring in 1982. Lee's unique personality and approach to the game made him a beloved figure in the sport and a fan favorite among baseball enthusiasts.
