Virdon began his professional baseball career in 1950 when he signed with the New York Yankees. He played as an outfielder and played for the Yankees until 1954. Virdon's most notable season as a player was in 1955. He won the American League Rookie of the Year award while playing for the Yankees. He hit .281 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs during the season. In addition to his success as a player, Virdon was also a successful manager. He began his managerial career with the Pirates in 1972 and managed them for four seasons. He continued to manage the Astros and the New York Yankees before retiring from managing in 1984.

Throughout his career as a player and manager, Virdon was known for his excellent defensive skills. He won the Gold Glove Award in 1962 and 1963 while playing for the Pirates. He was also known for his outstanding ability to analyze statistics and data, which made him a successful manager.
