Bob Friend was a professional baseball pitcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1950 to 1965. Born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1930, Friend attended Purdue University where he played college baseball. He signed with the Pirates in 1948 and after a couple of years in the minors he made his major league debut in 1950 at the age of 20. Friend was known for his consistent and reliable performances, helping the Pirates win the National League pennant in 1960. He was named an All-Star three times and received votes for the National League Cy Young Award on multiple occasions.
