Bonilla's most successful years came during the early 1990s while playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was named to the All-Star team six times, won three Silver Slugger awards, and finished in the top ten in National League MVP voting three times. In 1990, he led the Pirates to an NL East division championship and hit .400 in the NL Championship Series, but the team ultimately lost to the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series.
