He attended Southeast High School, where he excelled in baseball, basketball, and track. Murcer spent his entire career in Major League Baseball as an outfielder and second baseman. He played for 17 seasons, starting with the New York Yankees in 1965. He left the Yankees in 1975 to play for the San Francisco Giants but returned to the Yankees in 1979. He played with the Yankees until 1983, after which he played briefly for the Chicago Cubs (1983-84).
