Brad Ausmus was born on April 14, 1969, in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended Dartmouth College, where he played baseball for four seasons as a catcher. During his college career, Ausmus was regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the Ivy League. In 1988, Ausmus was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 48th round of the MLB draft. He made his major league debut with the Padres in 1993 and spent three seasons with the team. In 1996, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he played for ten seasons. He was regarded as one of the best defensive catchers in the league during his time with the Tigers, winning three Gold Glove Awards. Ausmus also earned the reputation of being an intelligent player and an excellent game-caller. He retired in 2010 with a .251 career batting average, 1,578 hits, and 80 home runs.

After his playing career, Ausmus transitioned into coaching and managing. He was named the Tigers' manager in 2014 and led the team to a playoff appearance in his first season. In 2018, Ausmus became the manager of the Los Angeles Angels but was let go after the 2019 season. He currently works as a special assistant to the general manager for the San Diego Padres.
