After graduating from high school, McCarthy decided to pursue a professional baseball career instead of attending college. He was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2002 and made his MLB debut in 2005. Over the course of his career, McCarthy played for various teams, including the Texas Rangers, the Oakland Athletics, the Arizona Diamondbacks, the New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His career highlights include a 17-win season with the Diamondbacks and helping the Dodgers reach the World Series in 2017.

McCarthy is also known for his unique approach to the game of baseball. He was one of the first pitchers to embrace data analytics and used this knowledge to improve his pitching style. McCarthy was also known for his sense of humor and his engaging personality both on and off the field.
