He attended the University of San Diego, where he played college baseball as a left-handed pitcher for the Toreros. In 2016, Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he had a brief stint before being released. He signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Cubs but suffered a back injury and never appeared in a game for the team. Matusz announced his retirement from professional baseball in 2018 and currently serves as a scout for the Los Angeles Angels.
