Carl Morton was born on January 18, 1944, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a professional baseball pitcher who played in the Major Baseball League (MLB) for the Montreal Expos, Atlanta Braves, and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Morton attended the University of Kansas and signed his first professional baseball contract with the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent in 1964. Morton had a remarkable career in baseball, where he won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1970. He had his best season in 1971, where he won 18 games for the Atlanta Braves, which helped the team secure the National League West championship. He played a significant role in the postseason, winning the first game of the National League Championship Series, where the Braves defeated the San Francisco Giants. Morton was also an All-Star in 1972, where he recorded 17 wins and 21 complete games. In his six-year career, Morton recorded 87 wins with an earned run average of 3.73.

Morton retired from baseball in 1977 and went on to pursue a career in coaching. He coached the rookie-level GCL Expos in 1978 and the GCL Pirates in 1979. He also pursued his passion for music after retiring; he played the guitar and released his first album in 1991, titled "Guitar Music for Small Rooms." Morton passed away on April 12, 1983, at the age of 39 due to complications from injury sustained in an automobile accident.
