McCullough played for four different teams in his 16-year career in the major leagues. He spent the majority of his career playing for the Cubs, where he was a reliable catcher and a good defensive player. He also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cincinnati Reds. In 1950, he was named to the National League All-Star team after having one of the best seasons of his career.

While McCullough was known for his defense, he was also a decent hitter. He had a career batting average of .246 and hit 62 home runs in his career. He retired from baseball after the 1956 season and went on to become a coach and a scout for various teams. McCullough passed away on May 4, 1982, in Wichita, Kansas, leaving behind a legacy as a durable and dependable catcher during the golden age of baseball.
