Connie Marrero Autograph

Connie Marrero was a Cuban professional baseball pitcher, born on April 25, 1911, in Sagua la Grande, Villa Clara, Cuba. He started his professional career in the Cuban League, and eventually became a member of the Washington Senators in 1950 at the age of 39. Marrero stood at only 5'5" tall and weighed 158lbs, but his dominant pitching skills more than made up for his small stature. Marrero's success peaked in the 1951 and 1952 seasons when he had a combined 24-17 record with an ERA of 3.31. In 1951, at the age of 40 years old, he was named to the American League's All-Star team. At the time, he was the oldest pitcher to ever make an All-Star team. Connie continued to pitch for the Senators for four more seasons before returning to play in Cuba until 1960. Over the course of his career, Marrero pitched 1,787 innings and accumulated 336 strikeouts with an ERA of 3.67.

Unfortunately, after retirement, Marrero was not permitted to attend many baseball-related events due to the Cuban Revolution. It wasn't until 2011, with the help of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and other baseball organizations, that Marrero was able to return to the US to be celebrated for his contributions to baseball. In 2012, at the age of 100, ConnIe Marrero passed away, leaving a legacy as one of the greatest pitchers to ever come out of Cuba.
