McMurtry was traded to the Texas Rangers in 1989, where he played for three seasons. In his first season with the Rangers, he had a career-high 16 wins and a 3.81 ERA. McMurtry retired from professional baseball in 1992 with a career record of 70-66 and a 3.85 ERA. After his playing days, he went on to become a baseball coach at various high schools and colleges.
