Long is best remembered for his impressive home run hitting ability with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In May 1956, he made history and tied the Major League record by hitting a home run in eight consecutive games. His exceptional performance throughout the season earned Long an All-Star selection alongside Hall of Famers like Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra. Long also had a notable stint with the New York Yankees during which he hit 22 homers in the 1957 season.

Long retired from professional baseball in 1963 and passed away on January 22, 1991, at the age of 64. During his MLB career, he had a career batting average of .267 with 132 home runs, 530 runs batted in, and a .450 slugging percentage.
