Lewis began his professional baseball career when the Oakland Athletics drafted him in the 18th round of the 1988 Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut with the A's on September 3, 1990, and played for the team for three seasons before being traded to the San Francisco Giants in 1993. He spent four seasons with the Giants, where he won a Gold Glove Award for his excellent fielding in 1994. He then played for several teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox, before retiring from baseball in 2002. Throughout his career, he was known for his excellent defensive play, speed, and base-running abilities.

In his 13-year career, Darren Lewis played in 1,611 games, recorded a batting average of .267, hit 36 home runs, and stole 247 bases. However, it was his defensive skills that made him an exceptional player. He had a fielding percentage of .991 and committed only 30 errors over 12 seasons. He had a career-high of 495 putouts in 1994 and led the National League in outfield assists in 1993 and 1994. Lewis was also a player who excelled in the playoffs. In 1995, he hit .313 and led the Cincinnati Reds to a Division Series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
