May made his major league debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1967 and played there for three seasons before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970. He had a strong first season with the Brewers, hitting 25 home runs and 82 runs batted in. May continued his success in 1972, where he earned his only All-Star selection during his career. He finished that season with a batting average of .303, 25 home runs, and 93 runs batted in.

May played his final years in baseball for the Atlanta Braves and the Texas Rangers, retiring in 1977. Throughout his baseball career, May was a consistent performer, hitting a total of 94 home runs, 438 runs batted in and holding an overall batting average of .251.
