McKay was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1972 and made his debut in the Major Leagues in 1975. He spent three seasons with the Twins before moving on to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he played for two seasons. McKay's most successful years were with the Oakland Athletics, where he played from 1981-1985. During his time with the A's, McKay was an integral part of their World Series championship team in 1981, playing a key role in their success with his solid defense and clutch hitting.

After retiring from playing in 1989, McKay moved on to coaching and has since become a well-respected coach in the baseball world. He has served as a coach for several teams, including the Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks, and most notably, the St. Louis Cardinals, where he has been a coach since 1996. McKay is known for his attention to detail and his ability to develop young talent, and his contributions to the game of baseball have earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the top coaches in the sport.
