Eckersley began his career with the Cleveland Indians, where he started as a starting pitcher. He had a successful rookie season in 1975, finishing with a 13-7 record and a 2.60 ERA. However, he gradually lost control of his pitches and struggled with injuries. After stints with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, Eckersley's career turned around when he was traded to the Athletics in 1987. Oakland converted him to a closer, and he quickly became one of the most dominant closers of his era.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Eckersley led Oakland to three American League pennants and a World Series title in 1989. He also won the American League most valuable player and Cy Young awards in 1992, becoming the only pitcher in history to win both awards in the same season. He retired in 1998 with 390 saves and a 3.50 career ERA. Eckersley's success as a closer, combined with his longevity and ability to reinvent himself as a pitcher, has cemented his place as one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history.
