Dennis Martinez is a retired Nicaraguan professional baseball player who spent his career playing as a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on May 14, 1955, in Granada, Nicaragua, Martinez began his baseball journey with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1974. It wasn't until he joined the Montreal Expos in 1986 that his pitching prowess would become more widely noticed. Martinez's career highlights include a perfect game for the Expos against the Dodgers on July 28, 1991. He helped the Expos clinch their only playoff berth in 1981, and he had 245 career wins on the mound. Over his 23-year pitching career, Martinez played for several teams, including the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners. He was also named an All-Star four times and earned the honor of starting the 1991 All-Star Game for the American League. Martinez retired from professional baseball in 1998 and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2020.

Off the field, Martinez struggled with alcoholism throughout his career, but he sought help and support to overcome his addiction. That journey of recovery inspired him to help others going through the same struggles. Since his retirement, Martinez has worked as a special assistant to the general manager for Cleveland and served as the pitching coach for the Washington Nationals. He's also actively involved in helping young pitchers develop their skills and overcome adversity, demonstrating how his deep commitment to the game of baseball extends far beyond his playing career.
