McLain's career peaked in 1968 when he won 31 games, becoming the first player in the 20th century to achieve this feat. Over the course of that season, he also managed to throw 28 complete games, 6 shutouts, and had a 1.96 ERA. This incredible performance earned him several accolades including the American League MVP award, the Cy Young Award, and the Babe Ruth Award. McLain's remarkable season also helped lead the Tigers to the World Series, where they emerged as champions.

Despite his impressive 1968 season, McLain's success was marred by personal issues that would later end his career. He was caught up in gambling scandals and involved in organized crime, which ultimately led to his suspension and demise in the league. McLain left baseball in 1972, finishing his career with a record of 131–91, an ERA of 3.39, and 1,282 strikeouts. Despite his controversial exit, his achievements on the field ensured that he will always be remembered as one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game.
