In 1952, Dick was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the third overall pick. His first season was marked by an impressive batting average of .284 with 116 hits, 61 runs batted in, and three home runs. He continued to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates for ten seasons. Throughout his time with the Pirates, Groat earned two National League pennants, appeared in five All-Star games, and was a two-time batting champion. In 1960, Groat won the National League MVP Award, a World Series championship, and he became the fifth player ever to lead the major leagues in doubles, hits, and batting average for a single season.

In 1963, Groat was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played three seasons. He was later traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, but he retired after the 1967 season. Overall, Dick Groat was an exceptional baseball player, known for his impressive field skills and consistency at batting.
