Ed Charles was a professional baseball player, born on April 29, 1933, in Daytona Beach, Florida. Nicknamed "The Glider," he was a third baseman who played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). Charles kicked off his baseball career in 1952 after being signed by the Boston Braves in his hometown. After three seasons, he was drafted into the military, which put his career on hold for two years. But he returned to baseball in 1957, signing with the Milwaukee Braves. More about Ed Charles

However, Charles made a name for himself in the baseball world with his stint at the New York Mets. He joined the Mets in 1967, and his performance was exceptional, leading them to the World Series the following year. For Charles, it was the pinnacle of his career as he helped the team win their first-ever championship. During his two seasons with the Mets, Charles played 174 games, batted .288, and hit 18 home runs.

Ed Charles retired from baseball in 1969, but his contribution to the sport was much more than just his on-field performance. After retiring, he worked with the Mets' community outreach program, where he impacted many lives. Charles was widely respected for his easy-going nature and humbleness.
