Ed Johnstone was born on October 21, 1954, in Brandon, Manitoba. He began his professional hockey career in the late 1970s and played with the NHL's Detroit Red Wings from 1980 to 1983. During his time with the Red Wings, Johnstone was known for his hard-working, gritty style of play and solid defensive skills. In 1983, Johnstone was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he enjoyed two more productive seasons. During the 1984-85 season, Johnstone set career-highs in goals (31) and points (62) and established himself as one of the top scorers on a young, up-and-coming Penguins team. Johnstone's contributions to the Penguins' offense helped the team make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. He continued to play in the NHL until 1988, finishing his career with 105 goals and 111 assists in 381 regular-season games.
After retiring from hockey, Johnstone settled in Canada and remained involved in the sport as a coach and commentator. He mentored young players and helped to develop their skills, passing on his knowledge of hockey gained from years of experience in the NHL. In 2015, he was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the sport in Canada.
