Eddie Mathews Autograph

Eddie Mathews was an American professional baseball player who was born in Texarkana, Texas, on October 13, 1931. He began his baseball career in 1952 with the Boston Braves and played as a third baseman. Mathews was a dominant force on the field from his rookie season and was named to the National League All-Star team in each of his first eight seasons. In 1953, he hit 47 home runs, which was the most by any National League player during the season. Mathews continued to play with the Braves until 1966, and he later played for the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and the Oakland Athletics. More about Eddie Mathews

During his baseball career, Mathews was well-known for his powerful hitting abilities as a third baseman. He finished his career with a total of 512 home runs, which was the second-most by any third baseman in the history of the sport at that time, and 94 game-winning home runs. Mathews also holds the record for the most home runs hit by a player who played the majority of his career as a third baseman in the National League. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1978 and his jersey number 41 was retired by the Milwaukee Brewers in his honor.

Off the field, Mathews was a respected figure in baseball and was known for his charisma and leadership qualities. After retiring from baseball, he became a successful baseball coach, working for the Atlanta Braves as a hitting instructor, and later serving as a manager for the Texas Rangers and the Atlanta Braves. His legacy as one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history continues to be celebrated today, and he remains an inspiration to many young baseball players.
