Ernie Harwell

Ernie Harwell was an iconic baseball broadcast announcer. Born on January 25, 1918, in Washington, Georgia, Harwell began his career in radio broadcasting in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1948, Harwell was hired by the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he helped introduce fans to Jackie Robinson, one of the first African-American players in the major leagues. Harwell then moved on to broadcast for the New York Giants and Baltimore Orioles before settling in Detroit, where he became the voice of the Detroit Tigers. Harwell spent over four decades with the Tigers, broadcasting over 7,500 games and becoming one of the most beloved announcers in baseball history. More about Ernie Harwell

During his baseball career, Harwell was known for his distinctive voice, his knowledge of the game, and his unique catchphrases. His signature phrase "That one's long gone!" was heard countless times throughout his career, including during the game where Detroit Tigers player Hank Aaron hit his record-breaking 715th home run in 1974. Harwell's skill as a broadcaster earned him numerous awards, including the Ford C. Frick Award in 1981, which honors outstanding baseball broadcasters. Harwell was also inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Radio Hall of Fame.

Off the field, Harwell was known for his philanthropic work, including his support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. Harwell passed away on May 4, 2010, at the age of 92, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the baseball community.
