Felipe Alou was born in the Dominican Republic in 1935, into a family of baseball-loving farmers. He quickly became a prodigious talent on the diamond, and in 1955 he was signed to a contract with the San Francisco Giants. He spent several years bouncing between the minor leagues and the major leagues, but finally earned a regular spot on the roster in 1959. Over the course of his career, Alou played for the Giants, the Milwaukee Braves, and the Oakland Athletics, and he was a consistent contributor to all of those teams. After retiring from playing in 1974, Alou transitioned into a coaching career, first as an instructor in the Giants' farm system, and later as a coach for various major league teams. However, his real calling came when he became the manager of the Montreal Expos in 1992, becoming the first person of Latin American descent to manage a major league team. He quickly became known for his strategic acumen and his ability to inspire his players, and he led the Expos to their greatest successes in team history.
