Marberry's success in baseball was largely due to his ability to throw a variety of pitches with great accuracy. He was the first player in Major League Baseball history to earn over 20 saves in a single season, which he did three times throughout his career. Marberry was also a talented reliever who could pitch for long innings, which was an innovative approach to the position at the time. He played for thirteen years in the majors, ten of which he spent with the Senators.

Marberry made history in 1930 when he led the Senators to their first ever World Series championship. He had an outstanding performance throughout the series, earning two saves and giving up only one run in nine and one-third innings pitched. Marberry ended his professional baseball career in 1936 with the New York Giants. After retiring from active play, he continued to serve as a coach and scout for various teams.
