Fran McCaffery was born on May 23, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He is known for his successful coaching career in college basketball for schools like Lehigh, North Carolina-Greensboro, Siena, and Iowa. Fran had a decent Baseball career in his early years. He was a good high school baseball player and played outfield for La Salle College High School in Pennsylvania. He was also offered a baseball scholarship to play for Pennsylvania State University but ultimately decided to play basketball instead.
Despite not pursuing a career in baseball, Fran remained a huge baseball fan throughout his life. In fact, one of his biggest supporters is his son Connor, who has played baseball for the University of Iowa. Fran can often be seen attending Iowa baseball games and supporting his son in his baseball career. Fran even hired a batting instructor to help his son improve his hitting skills.
In 2014, Fran's love for baseball was on full display when he led the University of Iowa's baseball team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 25 years. His passion for the sport and his determination to inspire his team to succeed paid off when they won the Big Ten tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament, where they defeated top-seeded Oregon State. Fran's success in the sport of basketball may be his claim to fame, but his love of baseball and the impact he had on the Iowa Hawkeyes' baseball team cannot be overlooked.
