Howard's baseball career began in 1958 when he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He spent his first few seasons bouncing between the majors and minors before finally securing a spot on the Dodgers' roster in 1960. It was during his time with the Dodgers that Howard began to show his power-hitting abilities, hitting a career-high 31 home runs in 1962. However, in 1964, Howard was traded to the Washington Senators, where he truly became a star. Over the next seven seasons, he hit over 40 home runs three times and was a four-time All-Star. In 1969, he was awarded the American League's Most Valuable Player award, leading the league in home runs (48), RBIs (111), and slugging percentage (.552).

Howard retired from baseball in 1973 with a career batting average of .273, 382 home runs, and 1,119 RBIs. He went on to coach and manage for several teams before retiring from baseball altogether. Despite never winning a World Series, Howard's power-hitting abilities and impressive career statistics make him one of the most revered players in baseball history. In 1987, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2020, he was named one of the Washington Nationals' "Ring of Honor" inductees.
