During his time with the Twins, Viola accomplished several milestones and received numerous accolades. In 1984, he won the American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player award, and in 1987, he was awarded the Cy Young Award as the American League's best pitcher. In the same year, he was the MVP of the World Series, leading the Twins to victory against the St. Louis Cardinals. Viola is also the all-time leader for strikeouts in Twins franchise history.

After playing with the Twins for eight seasons, Viola also played for the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and Toronto Blue Jays in the latter part of his career. He retired in 1996 with a record of 176 wins and 150 losses, 1,844 strikeouts, and an ERA of 3.73. Frank Viola continues to be remembered as one of the greatest starting pitchers of his generation, and was inducted into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame in 2005.
