Matthews Jr. started his baseball career in 1993 when he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays, but he didn't make his MLB debut until 1999 with the San Diego Padres. He then played for several teams, including the Chicago Cubs, where he won the Gold Glove Award in 2006 for his outfielding prowess. However, it was his time with the Los Angeles Angels from 2007-2009 that Matthews Jr. made his biggest impact. He hit 18 home runs and had 72 RBIs in his first year with the team and helped lead them to the playoffs in 2008.

In 2010, Matthews Jr. retired from the MLB after playing for various teams throughout his career. He finished with a .257 batting average, 108 home runs, and 484 RBIs. Despite being known for his fielding skills more than his hitting, Matthews Jr had some memorable moments on the offensive side of the ball, including a walk-off grand slam in 2006.
