Born on December 1, 1948, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, he began his career in the San Francisco Giants organization and later played for the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, and Chicago White Sox. Foster's breakout year came in 1976 when he was playing for the Cincinnati Reds. He led the National League in home runs with 29 and helped the Reds win the National League West division title. The following year, he hit 52 home runs, drove in 149 runs, and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award.
