Richard Michael Gossage, popularly known as Goose Gossage, was a former professional baseball player born on July 5, 1951, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He played for eight Major League Baseball (MLB) teams over his twenty-two-year baseball career. Gossage started his professional baseball career with the Chicago White Sox in 1972, where he mainly worked as a relief pitcher. In 1977, he was traded to the New York Yankees, where he became the team's primary closer. Gossage's successful stint with the Yankees saw him lead them to the 1978 World Series Championship, where he had a dominating performance, recording six saves in the series. Gossage's career included stints with the San Diego Padres, where he led the National League in saves in 1984, and the Oakland Athletics, where he helped the team win the 1989 World Series.

Gossage's career statistics are impressive, with 1,502 strikeouts, 310 saves, and a 3.01 earned run average (ERA). He was also a nine-time All-Star and earned the American League (AL) Rolaids Relief Man Award twice. Following his retirement from baseball, Gossage served as a minor league coach for various teams and worked as an analyst for the New York Yankees' baseball broadcasts. Despite being retired for over three decades, Gossage's legacy in baseball endures, with his dominant performance as a reliever leaving a lasting impression on baseball enthusiasts worldwide.
