During his career, Baines was primarily a designated hitter and right fielder and had a smooth swing that earned him over 2,800 hits, more than 1,600 runs batted in (RBI), and 384 home runs. He won the 1981 Rookie of the Year award after his impressive debut season, and in 1999 he earned his only All-Star Game appearance, solidifying his spot as one of the best all-around hitters in the game. Baines also played in two World Series, once in 1983 with the White Sox and again in 1990 with the Oakland Athletics. He officially retired in 2001 as a six-time Silver Slugger winner, meaning he was one of the best offensive players at his position in the American League.

Despite his relatively low-key personality compared to some other baseball stars of his time, Baines was known for his intense focus at the plate and clutch performance in high-pressure situations. But it wasn't just his talent that made him respected by fans and fellow players alike; he was also universally known as a beloved teammate and friend. After his retirement, Baines remained active in baseball as a coach and hitting instructor for several teams. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019, a fitting recognition for an exceptional player whose impact on the game goes far beyond his impressive numbers.
