Howard Johnson

Howard Johnson was born on November 29, 1960, in Clearwater, Florida. He played baseball at Clearwater High School before being drafted in the first round by the Detroit Tigers in 1979. After four seasons in the minor leagues, Johnson made his major league debut in 1982. Johnson was known for his versatility on the field, playing third base, shortstop, and the outfield. He was also a switch hitter with power from both sides of the plate. In 1987, Johnson had a breakout season for the Mets, hitting 36 home runs and stealing 32 bases while earning his first of two Silver Slugger Awards. He followed that up with another strong season in 1988, hitting 24 home runs and stealing 33 bases. Johnson's versatility was on full display during the 1986 postseason, where he played six different positions and helped the Mets win the World Series.

Despite his impressive career, Johnson has yet to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, he remains a beloved figure among Mets fans, and in 2012, the team inducted him into their Hall of Fame. After retiring from baseball, Johnson worked as a coach and manager in the minor leagues, and he currently serves as a roving minor league instructor for the Detroit Tigers.
