Hoyt Wilhelm was a prominent American baseball player, known best for his outstanding pitch known as the knuckleball. Born in Huntersville, North Carolina, on July 26, 1922, Wilhelm grew up in a small family of six siblings. In his early years, he worked on his family farm and played amateur baseball games during his free time. He began his professional baseball career as a relief pitcher in 1952 while playing for the New York Giants. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Atlanta Braves, and the Baltimore Orioles.
