Throughout the 1970s, J.R. Richard was one of the Houston Astros' most successful pitchers, earning three National League All-Star selections and an NL ERA title in 1979. Richard's career was slowed down in 1980 when he experienced some health issues, and he was unable to pitch for most of the season. In 1981, he made a comeback and led the Astros to win the NL West championship that year. However, in the following season, Richard suffered a stroke during a game, which ultimately ended his career at the age of 33.

J.R. Richard's extraordinary baseball career was undoubtedly one of the most impressive of his era. He had a 107-71 record, a 3.15 ERA, and 1,493 strikeouts in 1,422 innings pitched during his ten years with the Astros. Despite his shortened career, Richard's talent was undeniable, and he will always be remembered as one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball history. In 1999, he was inducted into the African American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his incredible achievements. Read even more about J.R. Richard at Wikipedia
