Jake McCarthy is a professional baseball player born on August 31, 1997, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He attended Scranton Preparatory School, where he played baseball and football. As a baseball player, McCarthy excelled in his high school and was named the state's Class 4A Player of the Year in his senior year. He hit .418 with 36 runs scored and 21 steals, playing center field for the team. He was so good that he committed to the University of Virginia, where he was later selected in the first round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
McCarthy's professional baseball career began in 2018 when he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks after being drafted in the first round (39th overall) of that year's MLB draft. He played in 45 games that season, split between the Rookie League and Class-A Short Season. In 2019, he played in 95 combined games with Class-A Kane County and Class-A Advanced Visalia, where he impressed with his hitting, speed, and defense. In 2020, he earned an invitation to the Diamondbacks' alternate training site and was added to the team's 60-man player pool. He was also named the organization's #7 prospect according to MLB.com's 2020 rankings.
