Jamal Mashburn is a former professional basketball player who became a household name during his time in the NBA. He was born on November 29, 1972, in New York City, and grew up in a project in the city. Despite the odds against him, Jamal showed an interest in basketball at a young age and began playing at the age of five. At Kentucky, Jamal quickly became a star player and helped lead the Wildcats to the 1993 Final Four. He earned All-American honors three times and helped Kentucky win three SEC Championships during his college career. In 1993, Jamal was selected as the fourth overall draft pick by the Dallas Mavericks, where he played for five seasons. He went on to play for the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets, earning NBA All-Star honors in 1994, 1995, and 2003. Mashburn retired from the NBA in 2004 and was inducted into the Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
